Is home battery storage safe?

Home battery safety explained: the standards that apply, how installation and siting are controlled, what monitoring does, and what to do if something seems wrong.

The short answer

Home battery systems installed to current UK standards by a competent installer are considered safe for domestic use. Safety depends on the product's certification, where it is sited, the quality of the electrical installation, and ongoing monitoring. Any scheme should be able to tell you which standards its equipment and installers meet.

Product standards and certification

Domestic battery systems sold in the UK are expected to meet recognised product safety standards covering the cells, the battery management system and the inverter. Ask any scheme for the make, model and the specific certifications held, rather than a general assurance.

Installation and siting

Most risk in practice comes from poor installation or poor siting rather than the battery itself. Installations should be carried out by qualified electricians working to the current wiring regulations, with the location chosen for ventilation, fire separation, physical protection and safe access for maintenance.

In social housing, the landlord's own asset and fire-safety processes apply on top of this, and should be followed rather than replaced by a supplier's process.

Monitoring and what happens if something goes wrong

A managed system continuously monitors temperature, voltage and fault conditions, and can isolate itself automatically. Residents should have a named contact and a clear route to report anything unusual — a smell, a noise, heat, or a warning light.

If you think something is wrong right now

If you can smell burning, see smoke or believe there is a fire, leave the property and call 999. For a power cut, call 105 to reach your network operator. For anything else about equipment in your home, contact your housing provider and the scheme's support line.

For residents

You should be given the make and model, the installer's credentials, a named support contact and clear instructions for reporting a concern before anything is installed.

For housing providers

Battery installations must sit inside your existing fire-safety, asset-management and contractor-competence frameworks. Ask for evidence, not assurances.
