How does home battery storage work?

A plain-English guide to home battery storage: what the equipment does, when it charges, what residents notice, and what it does not do.

The short answer

A home battery stores electricity so it can be used at a different time from when it was drawn. It charges when electricity is cheaper or more plentiful — often overnight — and discharges when the household is using more, typically in the evening. The household's appliances work exactly as before; the change is in when electricity is bought, not how it is used.

What the equipment actually is

A home battery system is typically a battery unit, an inverter that converts between the battery's direct current and the home's alternating current, isolation and safety equipment, and a controller that decides when to charge and discharge. In a managed scheme, the controller talks to a central system over an internet connection.

What a resident notices

In normal operation, very little. Lights, cooking, heating and appliances behave the same way. The system is not a power cut backup unless it has been specifically designed and installed for that, and it does not change who supplies your electricity.

The visible difference is on the bill or in the scheme's reporting — a different pattern of when electricity was bought.

What it does not do

A battery does not reduce how much electricity your home uses. It does not make appliances more efficient. And it cannot guarantee a saving, because that depends on your tariff, your usage pattern and how the system is controlled.

For residents

Nothing about how you use your home needs to change. The questions worth asking are about safety, maintenance, data and how any saving is passed to you.

For housing providers

Install access, safety sign-off, maintenance responsibility and connectivity are the practical delivery constraints. Plan resident communications around 'nothing changes day to day'.
